CSM (Ret.) Robert Sweeney has resigned from his role as EANGUS president after careful consideration and consultation from his health care team. In a letter to the Executive Council, Sweeney said, “It has truly been an honor to know and work alongside all of you in the vital effort of protecting our National Guard. If you know me, you understand that I wear my heart on my sleeve; making this decision was not easy, but it was necessary.”

CMSgt Josh J. Baker will assume the role as EANGUS president effective immediately, and humbly thanks Sweeney for his leadership. “I’m incredibly proud of Past President Robert Sweeney—not only for the impactful work he accomplished as President over the past 11 months on behalf of the enlisted members of the National Guard, but also for having the courage to prioritize his own well-being. I know the Command Sergeant Major in him wanted to push through and continue serving the Association, but true leadership is not just about perseverance—it’s about self-awareness,” Baker said.

“As leaders, we often tell our subordinates to take a knee and rest before they burn out. It speaks volumes when a leader recognizes that same need within themselves. Taking care of yourself first isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength—and it ensures you’re able to take care of others when it matters most,” Baker said.

Sweeney will continue to cheer for EANGUS’s mission and hopes to find new ways to contribute once his health has stabilized.

“It has been an honor to be part of EANGUS’s efforts to foster community resilience, secure corporate sponsorships, and advocate for the National Guard. I am deeply grateful for the trust and collaboration of our board members, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and partners,” he said.

Sweeney is committed to finalizing ongoing projects and remaining available during the transition, but will not be in attendance at the 2025 EANGUS Conference.

Elections to fill the remainder of the Vice President’s term will be held during the EANGUS Conference in Reno. Nominations can be submitted here. The deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 12 at noon.
